Tracking widget

The tracking widget is a small public page for following a job without signing in. You type the job reference, for example a bill of lading number, and the page lists the job’s work orders, each with its container, size, weight, goods and latest event. A job is one shipment or assignment the company handles, and each of its containers or loads is a work order.

The page’s address is the company’s TrakIT address followed by /ext/external.aspx, for example https://trakit.example.com/ext/external.aspx. The company can link to it, or show it inside its own website or a customer’s: see Embed the widget in a website.

  1. Open the page.
  2. In the box, type the job reference. The box is labelled with the company’s name for the job reference, by default Transport Document:.
  3. Press Enter, or select Search.

Please wait… shows while the page searches, then the results appear.

  • Type the whole job reference, as the company wrote it. Capitals don’t matter, but a part of the reference finds nothing.
  • Only the job reference is searched: a container number finds nothing.
  • Type the reference without spaces. It must be 4 to 40 characters long, with only letters, digits, /, - and _; for any other search the page says what is wrong (see the messages).

The list shows the work orders of the job, in the order of their IDs, whatever their status: closed and cancelled work orders are included. It shows 100 work orders at most.

Column Shows
Work Order ID The work order’s number in TrakIT.
Workflow The workflow of the job: the kind of service, as the company names it.
Container/Manifest The container number, or for a load without a container, its load ID.
Size The container’s length in feet, for example 20 or 40. - when there is none.
Weight The weight, in kilograms. - when there is none.
Commodity The goods.
Last Event The latest event of the work order that the company shows to its customers, under the name it gives them, with its time and date below it, for example 14:20, 19 Oct. The time is in UTC. Empty when there is no such event yet.

On a phone, Workflow, Size, Weight and Commodity are hidden; on a tablet, Workflow and Commodity.

Too many requests. Please wait a moment and try again. Too many searches came from your network address: see Limits. Wait a minute, then search again.
— No Jobs Found — No job has that reference. Check it, and see Look up a job for what the page can find.
— An error occurred — The page could not reach TrakIT, or TrakIT could not answer. Try again later.

Add ?q= and a job reference to the address to open the page on that job:

https://trakit.example.com/ext/external.aspx?q=EXL-2610-0042

The page fills in the box and searches at once. Use such a link in an email, on a customer’s own portal, or in a QR code.

This page may be shown inside a page of another website, in a frame, which the portal does not allow. For example:

<iframe src="https://trakit.example.com/ext/external.aspx"
title="Track your shipment" width="100%" height="400"></iframe>

Add ?q= and a job reference to the address in src to show one job, as in Open the widget on a job. Replace trakit.example.com with the company’s TrakIT address.

The widget has its own simple look, which cannot be changed. For a tracking page in your own design, your website’s server can get the same details from the GetShipment API, with an API key set up by TrakIT Support. Call it from the server, never from the visitor’s browser, where anyone could read the key.

  • Anyone can look up a job. The page asks for no sign-in: anyone who has a job reference can see the work orders of that job, with their containers, weights, goods and latest events. To show a customer only their own records, use the external portal, or an Entity Tracking shared link.
  • Searches are limited. So that the page cannot be used to look up job references in bulk, TrakIT answers up to 20 searches a minute from one network address, counted together with the pages of shared links. Over the limit, the page says Too many requests. Please wait a moment and try again. The address can search again at most a minute after its first search of those 20.
  • One job at a time, by its full job reference, with up to 100 work orders.

Anyone, without signing in. Nothing needs to be set up: the page is part of every TrakIT installation. The label of the search box is the company’s name for the job reference, which TrakIT Support sets.
